01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

Nestled in the heart of New Haven’s vibrant Chapel Street corridor, China King offers an inviting glimpse into the flavors and textures of classic Chinese cuisine with added touches that satisfy seafood lovers and vegetarians alike. This unpretentious yet charming restaurant has cultivated a loyal following thanks to a menu brimming with time-honored favorites, generous portions, and wallet-friendly prices.

The culinary experience at China King dazzles the palate through its rich diversity. From the crispy, golden Roast Pork Egg Roll and the delicately spiced Shrimp Egg Roll to the delightfully crunchy Seafood Spring Roll, each appetizer is crafted to awaken your appetite. Vegetarians will appreciate the Vegetable Egg Roll and Steamed Vegetable Dumplings, which are light yet packed with authentic flavor. The star-studded Special Cantonese Dishes such as the Happy Family (lobster, shrimp, chicken, beef & roast pork) and Seafood Delight (a sumptuous blend of lobster chunks, crabstick, jumbo shrimp, and scallops sautéed with fresh Chinese vegetables) are culinary celebrations that showcase the kitchen’s mastery in balancing bold tastes and fresh ingredients.

If you’re craving comforting noodles, the Chow Mei Fun or Chow Fun options shine with your choice of vegetable, pork, chicken, beef, or shrimp, including the uniquely satisfying Singapore Chow Mei Fun which harmonizes shrimp, chicken, and roast pork for a hearty, fragrant dish. Diners often praise the orange chicken, a crispy, tangy delight that has become a go-to for many regulars.

The atmosphere is straightforward and cozy, perfect for a casual lunch break or a relaxed dinner. Despite its modest, no-frills décor, China King exudes a welcoming vibe, with friendly and attentive staff who ensure a quick, pleasant dining experience. Many visitors appreciate the clean, tidy environment and the efficient service that gets meals to the table swiftly without sacrificing quality.

Customer feedback paints a picture of consistency and satisfaction: food cooked to perfection, savory sauces with plenty of flavor, and good portion sizes. While a few mention the staff at the register can sometimes be less enthusiastic, this does not noticeably detract from the overall warmth and comfort found here. For those who appreciate authentic American Chinese cuisine with a diverse menu that includes seafood and vegetarian options, China King is a genuine gem in New Haven’s culinary scene.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through, allow yourself to be drawn in by the familiar aromas and satisfying tastes that China King delivers. It’s a place where tradition meets flavor, offering a dependable, delicious dining option in a bustling neighborhood.

China King was a go-to spot for lunch while I was taking classes at Gateway this spring!! Quality chicken with lots of sauce, and the lunch special price is hard to beat. My only gripes are that the lady who works the register is usually a bit crabby, and that the wonton soup is practically water (luckily you can substitute it for a drink in the lunch special though, so it wasn't a big deal for me). Was unsure about this place at first for those reasons, but the food is worth it

Came here for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. This is your classic American Chinese spot. No frills but the food was on point and the service was quick. I had the orange chicken and it was delicious. Prices are great. Don’t be scared off by the bad reviews.

The food was good, place was clean. Service was fine, the girl was quite friendly. Took 10 minutes or so for the food to be ready. Just a small little shop, nothing fancy.
